PROJECT OVERVIEW
PENDING is a Bristol based book and media club exploring stories across page and screen.
In our media-rich world, it’s difficult to ignore the presence of the screen when talking about stories and entertainment. PENDING is a space where films and shows are discussed alongside books. To encourage the multi-medial approach, the monthly reads are books that have been adapted for the screen.
This approach to the classic concept of a book club aims to encourage reading not as an alternative to enjoying films, but as an extension and deeper exploration into the rich world of storytelling.

Inspiration
As PENDING is not just a book club, but instead focuses on stories across different mediums, the design was heavily inspired by both digital and analog elements, to mirror the club’s focus on book-to-screen adaptations.
The typeface and color palette draw inspiration from old newspapers and early Internet UI design.
A simple sans serif font and a minimalist logo paired with bold colors ensure a modern feel, while the body font nods to the print era.
Logo design process
Inspired by loading bars and the ever-overflowing bookshelves any avid reader is familiar with, the logo is pieced together from simple shapes, resulting in a unique yet easily understandable and recognizable design. Its simplicity allows for a wide application and play with the logo elements.
In playing with the initial idea of incorporating a full loading bar, I realized that for its intended use the logo needed to be less complex and busy.
Stripping the logo down to the minimum elements required for the idea of a progress bar meeting a bookshelf to be clearly communicated allowed me to reduce the logo to two lines.

monthly announcements – Flyer Stand – bookmark
Monthly announcements are shared within PENDING’s group chat. The quick overview offers a short summary of both book and film, so everyone knows what the next read will be.
The flyer stand helps new members easily spot the group at their monthly gatherings in public places. Some general questions assist in prompting deeper discussion and directing the conversation.
The questions are repeated on the book clubs bookmarks, to encourage active reading.
