"Once in a Blue Moon we come together to showcase independent filmmakers and celebrate the creative talents from Tabb and the South West community. Featuring a curated selection of short films, Blue Moon is an evening to remember, full of of cinematic discovery and local storytelling."
For the 2024 Blue Moon Screenings, I created a series of designs to be used throughout the event.
Drawing inspiration from the name itself and already existing promotional materials shared on the event's social media accounts, I wanted my designs to feel familiar to the audience, while also working as a stand-alone concept.
I wanted the desings to pay homage to cinema and the experience associated with it. Since the exisiting graphics heavily fetaured half-tone prints and highly contrasted imagery, I wanted to carry that retro feeling into my own design.
With Georges Méliès 1902 film "Le Voyage Dans La Lune" as a reference, I created a series of assets reminiscent of early cinema: A cloud proscenium and lavish curtains hang above the already familiar theater seats, tying my designs into the existing branding of the event.
All designs were originally conceived in black and white, and then colorized, just as many old films have been, with a color palette picked directly from the colorized version of Méliès' film.
The end result is a playful design with the right amount of a handmade flair – fitting for an evening of independent cinema.
